Web resume of work for 2600.

2002, June to 2003, September

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) Hosting Provider & Administrator (Donor)

2600.com IRC - irc.2600.com

2600 Magazine, P.O. Box 752, Middle Island, NY 11953 USA, Telephone/Fax: +1 631 751 2600

DESCRIPTION: During the weekend of June 15, 2002, 2600's IRC was completely overwhelmed by "a massive Denial of Service (DoS) attack of biblical proportions".i The main communication forum of the 2600 community was silenced, and would remain so until the following year. I had not been previously involved with irc.2600.com (other than as an infrequent user). When I was building the MaladNet ISP in late 2002 I reached out to the 2600 contact,ii and offered my services once MaladNet was online. I offered the use of the MaladNet connection on the extremely robust UUnet backbone and my servers infrastructure to help rebuild from scratch a more "bulletproof" distributed IRC network. From January to June we worked tirelessly to build a robust volunteer-based world network, that has remained running ever since.iii

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Beginning around January 2003, began to setup dedicated infrastructure, server, network, router & firewall rules, hardening, etc. Contact and coordination with primary IRC administrators from defunct network. Provided our servers as original core hub, imported data from nickserv, chanserv, operserv, etc. from old system, and then allowing connection by new attaching leaf servers. Coordination with other donor volunteer servers. Transition to fully distributed infrastructure, leaving central hub role by September 2003, mission accomplished.

TECHNOLOGIES USED: OpenBSD, Linux, Hybrid-IRCD, hybserv, Nickname services, Channel services, Operator services, ipfilter, iptables, Cisco, OpenSSL, UUnet, WorldCom.
